Are you feeling disappointed or disillusioned with your retirement?
Do you sometimes wish you could start your retirement all over again and, this time, do it better?
Would you like to take your retirement out of the doldrums, give it a shake and a fresh coat of paint and turn it into the retirement you want and deserve to have?
Sounds like you need a Retirement Detox...
(And, if it's any consolation, you're not alone - up to 20% of all retirees report feeling disappointed by retirement.)
There are several reasons why a retiree feels like they need a Retirement Detox:
• They may have ambitious plans for their retirement that haven't come to fruition and their lack of progress is getting them down.
• They have already achieved all the goals they set for their retirement and are left feeling 'what next?'.
• They have just been over-run by everyday, mundane activities that leave precious little time for what they really want to do.
• They are struggling to blend their retirement plans and expectations with the plans and expectations of a partner or other significant person (for example, a grown-up child who expects them to be a full-time babysitter).
• Something came along that just blew their plans right out of the water - a divorce or serious health problem, for example.
Additionally, many retired people report that they 'wasted' the first 18 months to 2 years of their retirement - ironically, the time when they were at their youngest, because they started off by 'just having a rest for a couple of months'. Before they noticed, however, the 'couple of months' had turned into a couple of years and feelings of dissatisfaction and even boredom with their life were prompting them to do something more fulfilling and positive.
Of course, you deserved (and probably needed) to have a rest and some chill-out time immediately following your retirement. It can help you to make the adjustment to being retired and give you some breathing space. However, unless you put a limit on your chill-out time, you may find that the chill-out time becomes your life. If that's the case for you, don't worry - it's not too late and we can turn it around.
Whatever your reason for desiring a retirement detox, let's start by setting a date upon which you will stop chilling out or feeling frustrated/overwhelmed/unhappy/put-upon/bored (choose the most appropriate feeling) and write that date on your calendar. Give that date a title - 'RELAUNCH DAY', for example. Treat it as a new beginning - a time of growth and exploration. This is when your retirement really begins and you can start to take all those long-held dreams off 'hold' and begin to make them a reality.
Your retirement is probably going to be your last big chance to get a life that you really, truly love. Don't waste it! Use this time to fulfil those dreams that you consigned to a back burner - to learn a new language, to travel, to take a course, start a business, improve your health... - it's entirely up to you. You can set new goals or rekindle old ones. Decide what it is that you want to achieve or accomplish and then go for it...
